What is ABA and how can it help your child?
What is ABA?
Simply put, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the treatment that works!
It’s scientifically proven to effectively diminish or extinguish unwanted behavior, build skill, and increase communication in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
A Board Certified Behavior Analyst, (BCBA) will
- Analyze atypical behaviors
- Identify the triggers that bring on each one.
- Outline a plan to alter the child’s experience.
- Break down long term goals into bite sized achievable steps which are then
- practiced
- reinforced
- mastered
Here’s how it’s done:
Daniel’s mom says “he tantrums all the time” but upon analysis his BCBA identifies that he tantrums when attention is being diverted from him to others. Now, the BCBA will outline a step by step plan to reach the desired long term goal. Now, Daniel can develop a more appropriate way of getting attention. The ABA specialists begin to implement the plan by practicing, reinforcing, and eventually mastering new skills.
